How to layer for the winter cold

Clever layering is the secret behind staying both warm and stylish in the cold season.

Start with your everyday coat. Look for a soft and comfy coat that you can wear from early autumn through to cold winter. Choose wisely when it comes to both fabric and fit. A cashmere coat lets you breathe and keeps the warmth in too. Opt for an unlined and loose-fitting style – it will allow you to wear several layers underneath.

The first layer is the most important one. Choose a thin, finely knitted top in merino wool to wear closest to your skin. It makes a great first layer that breathes and will keep you warm. It's also a stylish top that can be worn on its own, or under a blazer at the office.

The second layer is also about fabric – choose a turtleneck (or crewneck if you prefer) in the softest cashmere. It's a luxurious and warm fabric that will keep you looking stylish, but also gives you that warm and cosy feeling.

The third layer is a thin and lightweight down jacket. Perfect for squeezing into its small pouch and keeping in your bag whenever you don’t need it. It also gives you some wind resistance – yet can still ‘disappear’ easily under your coat.

For a final warming touch, invest in a heavy, knitted scarf. It will protect your neck – where the cold tends to sneak in – and it also covers some of the down jacket, making sure you stay stylish. Add a beanie and a pair of mittens and you’re ready to take on winter.
