H&M STUDIO FW17, WOMEN'S

The marriage between streetwear and masculine tailoring is at the heart of H&M Studio FW17. Drawing inspiration from the creativity and energy of New York City, the collection ranges from flattering knitwear and feminine dresses to menswear checks and punk accessories.

We talked to Angelica Grimborg – one of the designers behind the collection – to get the lowdown on the must-haves and the creative process behind it.

We’ve been inspired by New York City and the contrasts between strong tailoring and urban streetwear
Angelica Grimborg, designer

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN LOOKING? WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU?
“We’ve been inspired by New York City and the collection reflects the needs of a modern woman’s wardrobe – sharp outerwear, soft dresses, flattering knits, versatile separates, statement accessories and a refined color palette. The frequent merging of different fabrics in a garment creates a more graphic structure and a new, fearless attitude. Our print designer has looked at graffiti and street art to create prints and patterns, and me and the other designers have worked to merge that aesthetic with items in feminine shapes as well as sharp tailored suits.”

TELL US ABOUT THE DESIGN PROCESS!
“We’ve researched fabrics and materials to find balance in the collection, traveled to New York for inspiration and – as we always do – developed silhouettes and structures to make a perfect wardrobe. We decided to work with a sober and classic color palette: black, white, midnight blue, gray-melange and soft brown shades.”

IS THERE A KEY ITEM?
“The checked backless dress. The combination of something tailored and feminine, with something knitted and a chunky accessory is key.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PIECES?
“I love the checked anorak and the black over-the-knee boots.”

IS THERE ANYTHING UNEXPECTED IN THE COLLECTION?
“Some of the punk-inspired accessories! They add so much to the streetwear aesthetic that defines the collection.”

ASIDE FROM THE STUDIO COLLECTION – ARE THERE OTHER ITEMS COMING FROM H&M THIS FALL THAT WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT?
“All the fantastic, intricate pieces from the Erdem x H&M collection!”

H&M STUDIO FW17, MEN'S

In sharp contrast to the womens range, the menswear collection draws inspiration from the great outdoors – more specifically mountaineering – and finding the perfect balance between modern and classic menswear silhouettes.

Andreas Löwenstam, head of menswear design, recalls wanting to create something bold (hence the patent leather pants) for the new season.

Mountaineering has served a special role in this collection

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN LOOKING? WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU?
“When developing our collections, we gather inspiration from all over the place before finding a muse. Streetwear and sportswear are part of our core this season, and especially mountaineering has played a special role in this collection. We’ve had off-duty ski bums and the high-climbing mountaineers in mind. Consequently, the collection includes bags with snap hooks, ski boot-inspired shoes and this season's hero item: the checked flannel shirt.”

TELL US ABOUT THE DESIGN PROCESS!
“We wanted functional pieces that mix sharp tailoring, soft knitwear and technical nylons. We explored contrasts and tried to push everything further to find the best possible expression – matte meets shiny, thin meets thick, and smooth meets hairy.”

IS THERE A KEY ITEM?
“There are a few key items, but if you’re only looking for one item, the hairy knit sweaters are definite must-haves.”

IS THERE ANYTHING UNEXPECTED IN THE COLLECTION?
“The patent leather pants, of course! It’s one of the most unusual materials in menswear, but also one of the coolest, in my opinion.”

ASIDE FROM H&M STUDIO, ARE THERE ANY OTHER ITEMS COMING FROM H&M THIS FALL THAT WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT?
“There are lots – as always – but one of my favorites is a checked coat being released later in September. The new online exclusive Edition range is really worth checking out as well.”

YOU SHOWED THE SPRING COLLECTION DURING PARIS FASHION WEEK. WHEN WILL THE FALL COLLECTIONS TAKE THE RUNWAY?
“All I can say is: not yet.”

H&M Studio arrives online and in selected stores on September 14.
