Meet the new season like an NYC fashion pro

Editor Alyssa Coscarelli does in-between-season dressing just right.
September 1, 2017

Alyssa Coscarelli’s signature mix of whimsical vintage finds, classic everyday staples, indie darlings and perfect denims has us relentlessly tapping and scrolling through her Instagram feed. As the fashion market editor at Refinery 29, it would probably be a professional faux pas if she didn’t have a great wardrobe. Luckily, Alyssa Coscarelli is very talented in the sourcing-and-styling area – both off and on duty.

So naturally, we challenged her to style four looks from H&M’s latest collection.

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
”My mum. She knows what looks good on her and runs with it, even though, like me, she doesn’t have that super tall, lanky, model-esque body type.  But in my eyes, everything looks good on her. Growing up with her as my mother and role model ignited my interest in fashion. I remember shopping with her when I was little, and being in awe of her taste and style and eye.”

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
”I think I’m still trying to find my ‘signature’ look, and that’s okay. I hate boxing my style into just a few words. Some days I’m minimal and modern, some days I’m vintage-inspired, others I lean more street or girly or trend-forward. Just depends on my mood.”

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER?
”My favourite designer changes every season, every day, every hour… But aside from all of the majorly obvious choices, I always love what Sandy Liang puts out. Her vision is clear, cool and accessible, and I always feel like I could (and would !) wear every piece she creates. It’s all equal parts girly and badass, and there’s always some unexpected detail that surprises and delights.”

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
”It’s never where you are, it’s who you’re with.”

Fashion’s important because we can’t just be naked all the time. Oh, and because it’s a reflection of the times.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
”My dad’s spaghetti. We call it ‘perfect pasta,’ and I always ask for a bowl the first night I’m ever visiting home.”

IF YOU HAD TO LEAVE YOUR APARTMENT IN A HURRY, WHAT WOULD YOU GRAB?
”Band-Aids, because if I were in a hurry I’d also likely to be wearing the wrong shoes for running.”

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?
”Vintage denim, a feminine blouse, worn-in sneakers and an iPhone in hand.”

WHY IS FASHION IMPORTANT?
”Fashion’s important because we can’t just be naked all the time. Oh, and because it’s a reflection of the times, a form of self-expression, a passion or an art form, for some…  It’s how we take what’s inside us and show it to the outside world.”

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE IN?
”I love the prints, colours and silhouettes of the 1960s. The high necks, mini bags, low heels and shapeless shifts are all totally my vibe…. I think I’d fit right in.”

WHAT ITEM WOULD YOU NEVER PART FROM?
”My favourite pair of high-waisted, wide-leg jeans. They hit in all the right places and they get compliments every time I wear them. If they ever die, I’ll probably die along with them. Seriously, I dread the day they’re no longer wearable… Hopefully it just never comes.”

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
”A veterinarian, a gymnast, a violinist… Or a combo of all three.”

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE?
”Granny pants. Comfort is key — what’s so bad about a VPL?”

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET?
”Hari Nef – I’m not-so-low-key obsessed with her. Oprah – I watched her show every afternoon after school growing up.  An afternoon with Frank Ocean would be chill, too.”

WHAT DO YOU NEED RIGHT NOW?
”A couch. I just got a new apartment and I’m practically starting from scratch. Lately, whenever my friends come over to check out my new space, we all just end up sitting and chatting on the floor. It’s cool and all, but a couch would be nice, eventually…”

WHAT IS YOUR LATEST BEAUTY DISCOVERY?
”I recently discovered a ‘melting lip powder’ that blows my mind. It starts out in powder form, and then as soon as it hits your lips, it changes to a smooth, creamy pigment with the perfect texture.  It’s so much fun to put on.”
