With a resume that includes power publications such as Elle Magazine, Instyle and Teen Vogue, Danielle Prescod has unbeatable experience in the ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ business. Now she spends her days as the lifestyle editor of BET.com, covering everything from fashion and beauty to love and relationships. And in between deadlines, she finds the time to light up our street style feeds with her fearless approach to mini skirts, prints and cool accessories.

We caught up with Danielle during New York Fashion Week, and asked her to share some of her style magic.

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
”I change my ‘style’ all the time. I kind of do to clothes what I do to songs I like. I play it to death until I don’t need to hear it anymore. I do that with things that I like to wear too. I think though my go-tos are mini skirts, big sweaters and flat shoes.”

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
”I have a lot of style icons! I love to look at how women wear clothes and put things together. I typically look more to women who aren’t models and actresses, since none of them really dress themselves anyway! My style icons include my sister Gabby Prescod, Zoe Kravitz, Taylor Tomasi Hill and Diana Ross.”

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
”The ballet. I was a dancer for years and it is still the most magical place to me.”

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE IN?
”This is kind of a hard question for me to answer. I would never go back in history where people of colour and women were even more oppressed than they are now but if I had to pick, I guess I am picking the 60s where minis reigned supreme!”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
”Cheese. Is that weird? I just always like cheese.”

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?
”I wore a uniform for years so I am most comfortable in a short skirt, sweater and heels. I never wear midi skirts. If I’m in trousers, they are usually skinny.”

WHY IS FASHION IMPORTANT?
”Fashion is important because it’s a form of expression that so many people can participate in. A lot of people think that you need money to love fashion, but some of the most creative people in fashion wear the most basic things every single day. When you put on something that you love it can change your whole attitude. It has transformative power and that’s why I get so defensive when people say that it is frivolous and doesn’t matter. Ok, try on a bomb-ass dress and tell me you don’t feel different.”

WHAT ITEM WOULD YOU NEVER PART FROM?
”I used to be so emotionally attached to my clothing, but I am not really that way anymore. I do have several pieces of jewellery that I could never give up. My friend Kristen gave me an emoji 100 necklace from her line KDIA. I will have that forever.”

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
”A plastic surgeon. I am not even kidding! It took one intro bio class in college to send me straight back to English literature though.”

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE?
”Never wearing a bra. I don’t even feel like it’s that guilty! But I think other people do.”

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET?
”Adele. She just seems like a lot of fun.”

WHAT DO YOU NEED RIGHT NOW?
”A husband. Deadass!”
