You don't have to wash it first
H&M's clothes do not need to be washed before being worn for the first time. In the production of our garments we take special care with substances that can provoke skin irration, allergies or cancer.
At H&M we have a list of the chemicals that we do not allow in our clothes. Examples of substances on the list are heavy metals such as cadmium, lead and mercury, certain dyes, formaldehyde and brominated flame retardants. These chemicals must not be used because they can be harmful to our health and also to our environment. Producers of H&M's clothes sign an agreement known as our Chemical Restrictions in which they guarantee that the chemicals on the list will not be used in production. H&M carries out regular tests to ensure that no harmful chemicals are found in the finished garments. The garments can therefore safely be used without washing them first.
