Amelia Widell on this season’s biggest décor trends

The Swedish photographer, interior stylist and couch designer tells us where she finds inspiration, what colours our walls should be and which items she loves from H&M Home.
September 6, 2016

Amelia Widell is the youngest of a host of siblings with big influence on the Swedish entertainment and media scene. Her older sisters Hannah and Amanda are known as multifaceted career women – doing everything from PR and television to wine and clothing – all the while inviting people to follow their lives through popular podcasts and Instagram accounts.

In contrast to her multitasking sisters, Amelia’s scope isn’t as wide – but just as captivating. With an impressive resume working as an interior stylist and photographer, she launched her own couch label last year. For obvious reasons H&M tapped her to style the living room in the just-opened H&M Home pop-up shop in the heart of Stockholm

HEY AMELIA! TELL US ABOUT YOUR STYLE!
“It’s an eclectic mix of modern and bohemian.”

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?
“I find a lot of inspiration on the internet and in social media, but my main source of inspiration is travel; seeing and discovering new places. I always try to find interesting hotels where interior designers have been allowed to go all in and do their own thing completely. That’s where I discover new ways to decorate and new ways to combine my favourite colours.”

WHAT’S ON TREND THIS AUTUMN?
“Colour! Walls are going to be painted in mostly earthy tones, but bright blues and greens are also coming in strong this season. In furniture glass, metal and soft velvet are very popular materials. Now we want our living rooms to be elegant and eccentric at the same time, and we want space for big green plants. The days of gallery walls are over and instead of a lot of small works of art, we want few but big paintings and photos instead.”

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN DECORATING A LIVING ROOM?
“That it’s a social room and that you need to fit people in it! See the rug as your frame and try to maximise the number of seats around it. Collect inspiration from images and try to find a theme by looking at all of them together. What do they have in common? When comparing them you’ll find your own style.”

YOU’VE DECORATED THE LIVING ROOM IN H&M HOME’S STOCKHOLM POP-UP SHOP. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ITEMS?
“The velvet cushions! Getting new textiles is the quickest and easiest way to update your living room at a relatively low cost. Invest in a bunch of jewel-coloured cushions and you’ll catch this season’s strongest trend!”
